At the seminar “Hajj and the Construction of the Islamic Ummah,” held last week in Qom with the participation of a group of seminary elites and organized by the Hajj and Pilgrimage Research Center, Ayatollah Reza Ramazani, Secretary General of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly delivered a speech. He stated that Hajj is a unique opportunity for building the Ummah and strengthening Islamic identity, and that its various dimensions must be fully utilized.

Referring to a hadith from one of the Infallibles (a.s.), he described Hajj as a symbol of international connectivity within the Islamic Ummah, adding, “Alongside prayer and zakat, Hajj can facilitate global communication among Muslims, promote cultural exchange, and strengthen the sense of belonging to a single Ummah.”

Ayatollah Ramazani stated that Hajj is not merely a ritual act of worship, “but a platform for moral training, the reinforcement of human virtues, and the dissemination of monotheistic culture.” He added, “Concepts such as patience, sincerity, self-sacrifice, and reliance on God are embedded within these rites.”

Emphasizing the political dimension of Hajj, he described it as a symbol of unity and the political power of Muslims, saying, “Hajj is reminiscent of monotheistic uprisings such as the movement of Prophet Abraham (a.s.) and the revolution of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h), and it can strengthen the spirit of resistance against oppression and corruption.”

The Secretary General of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly stated that Hajj provides an effective platform for networking within the Islamic Ummah. “The gathering of millions in Arafat and Mina is an unparalleled opportunity for synergy, experience-sharing, and launching a global movement of the unified Ummah.”

Referring to the economic aspect of Hajj, he noted, “At the time of the revelation of Surah At-Tawbah, some were concerned about economic recession, but the Qur’an promised sufficiency. Even today, if Hajj is managed properly, it can play an influential economic role and serve as a source of soft power.”

Ayatollah Ramazani added, “Islam possesses a complete framework for civilizational development, and Hajj is one of the key instruments for realizing this civilization. Unlike other civilizations, the Islamic civilization has the capacity to liberate humanity from moral and spiritual crises.”

Referring to Imam Hussain’s (a.s.) Sermon of Mina, he stated, “This sermon is a model for Ummah-building and demonstrates that Hajj is a platform for addressing major religious and social issues.”

Criticizing the enemies’ focus on intra-sectarian divisions, he said, “Today, colonial powers are no longer fueling Shia-Sunni division, but rather inciting internal sectarian conflicts. We must return to shared principles and pursue cultural dialogue on the path of building the Ummah.”

Ayatollah Ramazani stated that the “Rule of Commitment” (Qa‘idat al-Ilzam) is a strategic principle for international relations. “Even non-Muslims can be invited to ethical values based on their own logic, and this capacity exists within Islam.”

Concluding his remarks, he emphasized, “There is a need to develop a comprehensive document for Ummah-building so that Hajj and other capacities of the Islamic world may contribute meaningfully to the realization of justice, awareness, and global unity.”
