ABWA Denounces Bloody Suppression of Quds Day Demonstrations in Nigeria

On this year’s International Quds Day, Nigeria was the scene of a sorrowful and bloody event. On this day, military and security forces attacked protesters who were participating in a peaceful demonstration in support of the Palestinian people and in condemnation of the Zionist regime’s crimes. The assault led to the martyrdom of over 30 fasting demonstrators and left many others wounded.

The AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, in a statement, denounced this brutal suppression and called for urgent measures to protect the lives of Nigerian Muslims and to secure the release of innocent detainees in the country.

The statement, originally issued in Arabic, reads as follows:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسَا بِغَیرِ نَفْسٍ أوفَسادٍ فِی الأَرضِ فَکانَّما قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جمیعاً وَ مَنْ أَحْیاها فَکأَنَّما اَحیا النَّاسَ جمیعاً (قرآن الکريم، سورة مائده، آیه ۳۲ )

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

“Whoever kills a soul, without [its being guilty of] manslaughter or corruption on the earth, is as though he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all mankind.” (Holy Quran, Surah: Al-Ma'idah, Verse: 32)

In the deafening silence of human rights organizations and those nations who claim to defend freedom, human rights, and international law, the world once again witnessed a bloody attack by the Nigerian military and security forces against a group of supporters of the Palestinian cause and the oppressed people of Gaza. These tragic events took place on March 28, 2025, during International Quds Day, the last Friday of the Holy Month of Ramadan, leading to the martyrdom of more than 30 fasting individuals, the injury of many others, and the arrest of over 40 protesters.

This horrific assault targeted individuals who were participating in a peaceful march in solidarity with the Palestinian people and in condemnation of the Zionist regime’s crimes. According to reports from the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and eyewitness accounts, police and security forces attacked peaceful demonstrators, opening fire on them and employing weapons and unjustified violence.

This incident is a painful reminder of the waves of repression suffered by Muslims and Shiites in recent years. It is imperative that necessary measures be taken to prevent the recurrence of such armed operations against peaceful protests. Therefore, we call on the Nigerian government to ban its military and security forces from violence and to permit Muslims to peacefully express their opposition to Zionist crimes.

The AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly strongly denounces the suppression of demonstrations and the killing of innocent people. We call upon all religious scholars, intellectuals, and Islamic and humanitarian organizations to take appropriate legal action to safeguard the lives of Muslims. Likewise, all entities in Nigeria, including the government, security forces, and protesters, are urged to adhere to the rule of law and public rights. We also hope that the Nigerian government will take action to secure the release of innocent detainees.
